A Word From Heather

“I started practicing yoga in my early teens. Initially at a doctor’s suggestion following years of surgery, braces and therapy for a congenital spinal trauma. I didn’t really care for it at first, to be honest! But the results were immediate. It relieved pressure and pain from my back and legs and I instantly began to feel stronger. For most of my twenties I had a love/hate relationship with my yoga practice. But it’s something I have consistently gone back to again and again and has become a central core aspect of my life.

My training has included traditional Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and various kinds of Restorative, PreNatal and Meditation training. A few years ago I completed my Yoga Therapist certification as well which has greatly enriched my life and my practice. I try to keep my classes creative and fun. I don’t teach the same way, every day, for every class or every person. All of my training has been very traditional. So my philosophy is about respecting the needs of each individual. Sure, yoga can be challenging. But laughter and light heartedness are just as important, in my opinion, as perfecting your Downward Dog.

To say that I have a passion for this work is an understatement. To this day I have not found anything as satisfying or as exciting as assisting people in uncovering their own strength and helping them to accept their own resiliency. We all have innate healing capabilities. Sometimes it’s just a matter of remembering that; and giving the body what it needs to function optimally. I’m always fascinated, and truly inspired, watching people transform! I’ve seen some remarkable things over the years… but most notably is the look on someone’s face, and the change in their body, when they begin to realize they are SO MUCH MORE than they’ve been giving themselves credit for! Yoga is truly amazing because there really is no end to the journey. It morphs and changes with us. And just when you think you’ve figured it all out – in comes a new challenge and a new awareness. It really is amazing! ”

A Word From Nadia

“Yoga has helped me through the most difficult and devastating times as well as the most joyous and happy ones. I know firsthand the power of the practice and am honoured to share it with others. Whatever your reason may be for coming to the mat; perhaps dealing with the stress of work, the challenges of being a new mom, preparing for birth our suffering a loss or pain; my intention for my classes is to offer a supportive practice that empowers each individual. As a busy mom with two boys (3 if you count my husband) I have found nothing more valuable than my yoga and meditation practice. Since 2006 I have enjoyed teaching yoga to children, adults, and seniors. I truly believe you are never to old or to young for yoga and have been blessed since my first born to be teaching Prenatal and Mom and Baby Yoga classes. My classes are a blend of Hatha, Kundalini and Vinyasa yoga.

Way back in the day (2002!!!) I began seriously attending yoga with Heather Jones. No amount of courses and trainings can compare to the knowledge and experience I have gained from my apprenticeship with her in those early days. A true mentor; Heather’s confidence in me and my ability to teach was greater than my own. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to begin teaching my own classes. For that I am eternally grateful.”

A Word From Rachael

“I am honoured to be apart of the Village Yogi community as a yoga instructor and essential oil educator. My mission is to dialogue and share with one another on wellness, courage, beauty, strength, liberation, authenticity, and love.

My yoga journey began at age fifteen hoping to find some peace and ways to deal with anxiety. Since then my yoga journey has continued to be more evolutionary than revolutionary. During different ages and phases yoga has played a role, dedicated to various styles from Bikram to Kundalini, Power Yoga to Restorative. My teacher training began at Laughing Lotus in San Francisco, through retreats at Centre of Gravity in Toronto and was completed here in Niagara at Yoga by Sarah in 2014. I enjoy incorporating my love of essential oils during yoga and meditation practice for the benefits they offer in wellness and how they can be used to assist in mood management and individual emotional support.

I have now evolved into teaching classes that help us move to aid our bodies to keep us moving into awareness and wellness. My biggest message on and off the mat….
Love ourselves now, right where we are.”

A Word From Sharlene

I started exploring yoga over a decade ago as a way to balance my demanding and stressful corporate finance career. It captured me immediately, but it took a few years for it to become habit and part of my life. Once it did, yoga changed my life and my career in many more ways than I can possibly explain.

My training has been mainly focused in traditional Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga, although I have a tendency to teach and practice slow flow yoga (a milder version of Vinyasa). I’ve trained with Maria Garre, Sadie Nardini, Jill Miller, Ray Christ, Bo Forbes, Todd Norion and Ann Green (to name a few) but have been inspired by many including Iyengar, Shiva Rea and the one and only Heather Jones.

I met Heather by chance at friends’ that was hosting a private yoga class. She continued to fan the first flames of my yoga passion. If you know Heather, she exudes yoga in all that she says and does. I feel like I’ve come full circle and am honoured to play a small role in spreading the many blessings and gifts of yoga at The Village Yogi.

Jessie El-Farram

Yoga Instructor

A Word From Jessie El-Farram

“My relationship with yoga began close to 20 years ago. With my exercise routine growing stale, I was looking for something new. That’s when I was first introduced to yoga and I immediately fell in love. I became stronger and healthier; physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

I am also an avid runner and cyclist. Yoga has been such a compliment to these activities. My body is able to heal faster, I can perform more efficiently, my breath is controlled, my body can hold better posture and my mind is able to stay focused and clear.

I have also turned to yoga during times of emotional stress. Ironically during a time when my life was most unsettled was the same time I decided to become a certified instructor. Those 200 hours of training were not only educational, but very therapeutic as well. Once I was certified I needed to share this gift with others, and began instructing immediately.

Yoga has introduced me to so many kind and wonderful people. For me, yoga is not just a physical practice, it’s an exchange of energy, connecting, and becoming one. ”

"Dear Village Yogi,  Last month I started yoga, first time in my life. Did not know what to expect,or even what to take...! We had a very busy summer and moved 4 families in our family! Crazy! So my body started to complain, and 2 days before our move I could not move. My chiropractor who I called that day was on vacation...! So here I was..stuck..! I'm a person that believes that everything happens for a reason, so that week I was looking at my computer and there it was...a Groupon to try out yoga...for back problems..?. So here I went , skeptical, afraid, but after a couple classes I felt great, slept the whole night after...that's also a miracle..So I am planning to keep on going to class! Thanks Heather, you are awesome!"

"When I finally got up enough nerve to go to yoga - my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago! I expected to develop physical strength but the unexpected gifts are the best ones. I have developed mental & emotional strength and a confidence I didn't know I was capable of. I am a kinder, more patient person in all aspects of my life. Things are clearer & I am more focused. I am better to people at home...and at work...and as an extra bonus I have lost 50 lbs! I know all of these changes are because of my yoga practice."
